Overview (Wangdue Phodrang Festival)

The Wangdue Phodrang festival is held in the beautiful valley of Wangdue Phodrang. It usually takes place for three days festival of mask and folk dances founded by the 4th Temporal Ruler of Bhutan, Mr. Tenzing Rabgye (1638-1696), to commemorate the birth of Guru Padmasambhave.  Wangduephodrang Festival is famous for Raksha Mangcham or the Dance of the Ox. The Wangdue Dzong razed down by fire in 2012 and it’s currently under restoration so for the time being the festival is organized at Tencholing Army Ground. The Tshechu features dances by monks and laymen and concludes with the unfurling of the Guru Tshengye Thongdroel where people throng to receive blessings.  Wangduephodrang festival is well attended by people from Punakha and Thimphu as well and provides an occasion for merrymaking and revelry.
