Thimphu Drubchen

Overview (Thimphu Drubchen)

The Thimphu Drubchen is also known as Thimphu Dromchey and it is a day-long religious Bhutanese festivals performed at the Thimphu Tashichho dzong. The Drubchen showcases the scared mask dances dedicated to the chief protective deity of Bhutan, Pelden Lhamo. The Dromchey was first initiated by Kuenga Gyeltshen while he was in meditation.

The Drubchen falls on the seventh day of the eight month of Bhutanese calendar, folk dances also bless onlookers, to teach them the Buddhist dharma, protect from misfortune and exorcise all evil. It is believed that merit is gained by attending this festivals. The dances invoke the deities to wipe out misfortune, increases good luck and grant personal wishes.

Apart from its religious aspect, the festivals is an opportunity for an annual social gathering where people from all over the country (Bhutan) gathering where people dress their finest attire and jewelry. A tourist has been visiting and attending the festival and exploring the Bhutanese traditional and cultures. Photographing may be prohibited during the Drubchen.
